<image:caption>Artist: Ray Harvey Purchase Prize Winner of 2009 Christ in Art Festival From the artist: —I recently visited Sarasota, Florida and found myself at the Ringling Art Museum. Yes, this is the same John Ringling that is famous for his circus, but in Sarasota, his art collection is known for being the largest display of Baroque style painting in the world. There weren’t many visitors there that day and fortunately for me I had many of the galleries to myself. I must at this time confess a terrible, despicable, and shameful act. While in the Tapestry Gallery standing in front of what must have been a twenty foot square weaving by one of my favorite artists, Peter Paul Rubens, I had a thought, a dreadful thought. Seeing beautiful, famous and world renowned works of art is truly an experience but at this time, in this place it didn’t seem like enough. What would it be like to hold the palette of Van Gogh I wondered, or the brush of Da Vinci? Or more realistically, what would it be like to touch the original work of a Rubens? This was my chance. To touch a work of this master was going to be as close as I could ever get to being with him. I looked around . . . No one. Do I dare? I did. Ever so slowly and carefully I reached out my finger and brushed the edge of the art. It was at about this time the alarm sounded. I backed away with arms behind my back as if to ask what all the noise was about. And as fast as the alarm started it stopped. A guard came around the corner, saw my innocent enough pose and walked away with nothing more than a shoulder shrug. I had gotten away with the crime. To this day I can still remember the feel of the Rubens masterpiece. This reminded me of the Galilean woman who had suffered for twelve years with a bleeding disease. She had tried it all, seen the doctors and tried all the advice. Nothing worked. All hope certainly was lost? Then she heard about this Jesus. She had heard all about the miracles and signs. Water to wine, great fishing, but how is he with my problem? Maybe if I could get through the crowd. And maybe if I can put my arms around him. Or maybe, just maybe if I could only reach out ever so slowly and carefully and lightly touch him. Maybe. I know he could heal me. I know he can make me well. He is my only hope. But do I dare? You know the ending. She did get through the crowd of holy men. She found a way to reach through despair, empty promises and pain. And she touched him. The power went out of Jesus with such strength it even got his attention. She was healed. Jesus wanted to know, “Who touched me?” When she fell before him and declared how she had been instantly cured he said, “Daughter, your faith has made you well.” Where is hope?Form many it’s money, power or position. For others it’s as simple as one touch of the master.</image:caption>

The scroll of “O Come, O Come Emmanuel” shows a traditional “O” hymn of Advent. The feather suggests the coming of the Holy Spirit upon Mary, and the annunciation. The purple theme is in keeping with the penitential color of the season. The nails connect the birth in a cradle to death on the cross. Most prominently, the trumpet heralds the coming of the savior.</image:caption>

The stylized cross reminds us of Christ’s death and has three nails at each extremity.Above the cross we see three thorn branches somewhat entwined. At the center of the cross is the gold circle, representing the perfection and eternity of the Trinity. <image:caption>I Corinthians 15:55 Kent Addison Purchase Prize Winner - 1977 Christ in Art Festival “O death where is thy victory/ O death where is thy sting?” This drawing/watercolor represents the festival of Easter. With the background of stars and moon, suggesting heaven/eternity, a keyhole architectural frame stands over the shrouded corpse of death. (The artist’s son was the model for the corpse.) On one side of the corpse is the scripture reference to St. Paul’s faith in the resurrection of the body through the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. The key to the keyole of eternity is on the right side of death. Above the body are symbols of our promised eternal life in Christ: the Easter egg of new life, the butterfly which emerges from a caterpillar through the cocoon stage to a new form of life, super-0imposed upon the cross of Christ and the cube, the Holy of Holies symbol of God’s presence.</image:caption>

Hope is a driving force in our desires as we face growing up and all of the many changes in our lives. Never underestimate the power of hope. Hope becomes a part of life. Hope has emoting and conflicting power. I have a lot of hope for love. Helping activity of interested people follows hope.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Four Art Prints He Qi (pronounced Huh Chee) -donated by Judy Perry - Praying at Gethsemane - Woman Arriving at the Tomb - The Risen Lord - He is Risen Geometrical blocks of imagery are reminiscent of stain glass windows. He Qi uses bold colors of modern art with Chinese folk art themes. He presents the familiar with unfamiliar elements, creating a dissonance or discrepancy and challenging perceptions. A riot of colors and rich compositions are used to portray Jesus Christ as a messenger of peace and rejoicing. He Qi was sent to the Chinese countryside during the Cultural Revolution in China. He escaped hard labor by painting likenesses of chairman Mao Zedong. He discovered a copy of Raphael’s Madonna & Child in an old magazine and began painting this secretly. Thus began his life as an artist. He Qi became a Christian much later. It is an amazing connection of time and space: a 16th century Italian painting of a Christian theme speaks to a Chinese teenager, who becomes a Christian, studies art in Germany, and becomes a contemporary Christian artist. His images are used to illustrate Christian books, with exhibits worldwide. He Qi received 20th Century Award for Achievement in recognition of outstanding achievements in the field of Religious Art Theory and Christian Art Creation of IBC in Cambridge, UK “We are living in a time where there is much violence. There is little peace. We need to listen to the voice of heaven.” - He Qi</image:caption>

<image:caption>Tribute Don Pavelka 2009 Christ in Art Festival The Crown & Flame emblem is a symbol know the world over. It is a powerful reminder of who and Whose we are as United Methodists. It relates the United Methodist Church to God through Christ (cross) and the Holy Spirit (flame). The flame is a reminder of Pentecost when witnesses were unified by the power of the Holy Spirit and saw “tongues, as of fire” (Acts 2:3). The emblem is also a reminder of a transforming moment in the life of John Wesley, founder of Methodism, when he sensed God's presence and felt his heart “strangely warmed”. The two tongues of a single flame may also represent the union of two denominations in 1968: The Methodist Church & Evangelical United Brethren Church. This artwork is Don Pavelka's tribute to the Cross & Flame symbol that has provided him with instant recognition, meaning, and a sense of belonging, no matter where he might be in the world. His creative mosaic is comprised of many small glazed pieces of ceramic. Each piece is individual and colorful. Collectively, the Cross & Flame symbol emerges!</image:caption>

It depicts symbols of the crucifixion of our Lord Jesus: on the cross, the nails of his hand and feet, the ladder that assisted the setting of the cross, the sponge of vinegar on a stick, the spear that pierced his side and the dice with which the soldiers gambled for his robe. Over the crucifix is the monogram in Greek letters for “Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews.” On either side of the crucified are the figures of mother Mary and John, the beloved disciple. The side panels depict Mary and Joseph. At the bottom of the piece are the figures of twelve apostles telling us that this represents the apostolic faith of Christ's Holy Church. The apostles bear witness to three events: the incarnation of the Son of God, the atoning sacrifice of Christ on Calvary; and the resurrection and triumph of the crucified One.The triune God is also suggested:God the Father's Gift, the Son's sacrifice, and the risen Lord's availability to all as Holy Spirit.</image:caption>

<image:caption>JOHN – eagle, chalice & snake; Son of Zebedee and Salome and brother of James, John is known as the “beloved disciple”. John was so intellectual that he “soared” above the others, hence an eagle is one of his symbols. He wrote the gospel book of JOHN and the epistles I, II, & III JOHN. An attempt was made on his life by giving him a chalice of poison. A chalice with a snake in it is another symbol. He was also thrown in a vat of boiling oil, but again didn't die. John was then exiled to Patmos, where he wrote the book of REVELATION. He died of natural causes!</image:caption>

He became known as the “Doubting Thomas” after he asked to see the nail prints in the risen Jesus’ hands. Thomas’ doubts were transformed to a great faith he shared in Parthea, Persia and India. The ruler refers to the tradition that Thomas built a church by hand in India. Thomas was the only apostle to travel and preach the Gospel outside of the Roman Empire. The spear refers to his martyrdom. He was killed with a spear in Modrai, which is symbolized by a group of arrows, spear & rocks.</image:caption>

Jesus changed it to PETER – THE ROCK upon whom the Christian church would be built. In MATTHEW 16:19, Peter was given the “keys to heaven” by Jesus. When he was crucified in Rome, he requested he be crucified head downward for he was not worthy to die as his Lord had died. From Galilean fisherman to disciple, denier to proclaimer, missionary, bishop and martyr, Peter’s life with Jesus was astonishing.</image:caption>

<image:caption>JAMES – stone & fullers bat; The lesser, or younger, James was the brother of Jude. He worked in and near Jerusalem and was probably its first bishop. Tradition claims that he was pushed from a pinnacle of the temple at the age of 96. Near death, he rose to ask forgiveness for his enemies who then beat him with a fullers bat and sawed his body in pieces. Historical note: The trade of the fullers was to cleanse garments and whiten them. The process consisted of treading or stamping on the garments with the feet or with fullers bats in tubs of water containing some alkaline substance (serving as a soap).</image:caption>

<image:caption>JAMES – scallop shells, staff & sword; James was the greater, or elder, son of Zebedee and brother to James. Jesus gave James & John the nickname of “sons of thunder” because they asked on one occasion if they could call down thunder and lightning from Heaven to strike down some of their enemies! He traveled by sea to Spain, where the coast was supposedly covered with millions of scallops. The shells and staff represent his missionary pilgrimages. He was the first of the 12 to become a martyr. The sword is how he was killed by King Herod.</image:caption>

<image:caption>BARTHOLOMEW – open Bible & flaying knives; It is believed Bartholomew (or Nathaniel) was a nobleman, coming from royal blood (relating back to Absolum’s mother, Maacah.) He was a scholar and researcher and became a missionary to Armenia and India. He converted the king, Polymius, to Christianity. The king's brother ordered the execution of Bartholomew. He died a martyr, in which he was flayed (skinned alive) with knives and then crucified.</image:caption>
